Running time: ? ::: SYNOPSIS ::: This observational documentary series penetrates an intense bubble of experience - the casting and rehearsals for a major British play. It is about the drama behind the drama: the actors' struggles with the director and with their roles, the competing egos and the mystery of acting itself. The series takes one play per episode, and follows three processes - the auditioning of cast (with its inbuilt tension and resolution), the collaborative process of rehearsal (including the conflict between the actor and director's vision for the character), and the private process of how the actor grows into the role. Consider the chemistry and skill at play between Sir Trevor Nunn and Natasha Richardson as they carved out the role of Ellida in Ibsen's classic The Lady From The Sea, a role performed 25 years ago by Richardson's mother Vanessa Redgrave. Or perhaps Nicholas Hyntner's Henry V, his first play as the National Theatre's new artistic director in which he cast black actor Adrian Lester in the lead role. The casting and rehearsals are theatre in themselves, while the latter will focus on two strategies by which the actor becomes the part. One is based on the actor bringing his/her most powerful real-life experiences to the fictional character. We will be asking the actors to share these with us, and sometimes to even literally revisit places and relationships from their past. We will also follow our actors as they research their roles outside the rehearsal room, whether this be talking to war veterans or living for a night as a homeless person. Brimming with unscripted, unrepeatable drama - friction, chemistry and challenges - the transformation of cast and production crew as they work together in rehearsal reaches its finale when the curtain rises on opening night. The real alchemy has already happened before our eyes. With the London stage now being the new Hollywood, we could see star performers attracting a Channel 4 early Saturday evening audience or a midweek post watershed slot. |
