It's also the story of how we've got those events almost entirely wrong. You Thought You Knew: The Plantation is an important departure from the traditional script, putting a rocket under our received notions about Gaelic Ireland and the coming of the Planters and thus shaking the foundations of our politics. The
proportion of land the Irish were cleared from was minute. And, for the
first time, the ordinary Gaelic people of Ulster could rent land, be paid
for their labour and even buy farms - all unthinkable while they were under
the thumb of Gaelic aristocrats the O'Neills. And what about the great Protestant myth of the Plantation? It turns out that the chosen people had company - unionist mythology conveniently forgets the large number of Catholic planters who came over. By bringing the facts to bear on a story shrouded in myth, You Thought You Knew: The Plantation has the potential to ignite fresh debate about the historical legacy of this crucial period. |
